Can Root Canal Treatment Lead to Cancer?

Even though root canal treatment is actually a common procedure – with about 15 million being performed every year in the United States – there are still quite a few myths about it. One such myth states that root canal treatment can potentially cause cancer. Is this true? Or is it simply a misconception? Your endodontist is here to ensure that you have all the facts.

The Root Canal Treatment Process

A root canal treatment is performed when the pulp at the center of your tooth has become infected. After a local anesthetic is applied, an opening will be created in the tooth in order to access the pulp, which will be removed. The inside of the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned before being refilled with a biocompatible material. Once the procedure is complete, a crown will likely need to be placed to protect the treated tooth.

Root Canal Treatment and Cancer

The simple, straightforward truth is that root canal treatment is very safe, and there is no credible scientific evidence to support the idea that it can cause cancer. The myth first started in the 1900s, when Dr. Weston A. Price suggested that teeth that received root canal treatments still contained toxins that could contribute to cancer and other health problems. However, his studies were flawed, and there is no reliable research to back up the claim.

Sadly, the myth connecting root canal treatment with cancer saw a resurgence in 2018. A documentary entitled Root Cause suggested that there could be a link between root canal treatments and breast cancer in women. Despite the continued lack of credible evidence, this has had the unfortunate effect of spreading the rumor even further, causing more and more people to unnecessarily fear root canal treatment.

Other Myths About Root Canal Treatment

Another all-too-popular misconception about root canal treatment is that it is particularly painful compared to other dental procedures. In reality, many patients find that the treatment causes no more discomfort than a routine filling placement. This is thanks to the fact that the mouth is numbed at the beginning of the procedure.

On top of that, there are people who argue that having a tooth removed altogether is better than undergoing a root canal treatment. While removing the tooth in question does get rid of the infection, it also leaves you with an incomplete smile; this can affect your ability to eat and chew properly, and it can lead to the remaining teeth drifting out of place. In general, a root canal treatment is the better choice for your oral health.

Don’t let false information prevent you from getting your smile the care it deserves. Talk to your endodontist to clear up any other concerns you might have about root canal treatment so that you can get the accurate information you need to keep your grin safe.
