While many people have a lot of anxiety about getting a root canal, it can relieve the suffering that comes with a severely infected tooth. These treatments eliminate these infections at their source after the patient receives local anesthetic treatments, meaning that they take away the pain without being painful. To make things even better, they usually aren’t terribly costly. Here’s a short guide to how much root canals can cost as well as what factors determine the overall price.

What Is a Root Canal?

Root canal treatments are nonsurgical procedures that can repair a cracked or infected tooth to prevent it from needing extraction. After determining that a root canal is the best course of treatment for you, your endodontist will administer a local anesthetic to the tooth being treated to render the process completely painless. They will then access the inner chamber of your tooth and remove the infected pulp tissue therein. The chamber will then be sanitized, filled, and sealed to prevent further infection, and the tooth may receive a crown to restore its function and appearance.

What Factors Play into the Overall Cost of a Root Canal?

The cost of a root canal hinges on several factors such as:

  • Where the tooth is located in the mouth
  • Whether you are receiving the treatment from a general dentist or a specialist like an endodontist
  • If the tooth has already received a root canal before
  • Whether the root canal was scheduled ahead of time or performed during an emergency appointment
  • If placing a crown is necessary
  • How much of the cost is covered by your insurance
  • The location of the office where you receive the root canal

How Much Do Root Canals Cost?

Since the front teeth are easier for your provider to reach, it is less expensive to give them root canal treatments. The farther back in the mouth the root canal is performed, the more expensive the treatment will be. While first-time root canals can cost anywhere between $700 to $1,600, retreating a tooth that has already received a root canal is a more complex process, meaning you may pay an additional 20% of the cost of a first-time root canal.

Luckily, dental insurance typically covers restorative treatments such as root canals at around 50%. The overall cost of a root canal is a small price to pay for saving your tooth from extraction while allowing you to live comfortably again.
